Lynda King, co-founder of Newsport Beach – based King Size bows, drops “bow” into her conversations, whenever she can, as in “bow-dacious”.

She’s come up with another pun for her latest product: The Rain Bow, a weather proof decorative, bow. King’s company produces and sells giant bowls, the kind you might get when you buy a new car. Crevier BMW of Santa Ana was one of her first customers.

“They get the marketing angle of it” she said.

Mike Lake who handles marketing for Crevier BMW, said when the dealership sells a car that’s going to be a gift, it’ll slap a big red bow on it.

“It works pretty cool”, he said.

Crevier also uses the bows to decorate with , during the holidays.

King and her partner Kendra Jacobs started their business about a year and half ago.

King said it was an idea she had tucked in the back of her mind.

Several years ago, she was in search of a red big bow after she and her husband bought a car for their daughter for Christmas.

Kings bows sell for $48 a piece with volume discounts. The team is finding the “Perfect” big red bow, she said.

I was in R&D for 9 months”, she said.

The “Perfect bow” is one that dealerships easily can store and put together.

Five of King’s bows fit in a box and lay flat for easy shipping, she said.

King said she found she was on to something when she called up auto dealers and asked them: If she bought a car where could she get a big red bow. Nine out of ten had no idea, she said.

From there, King started the business with a flier sent to 2,000 dealerships. She said she got 70 as customers. Others have come by word of mouth.

“If one owner owns a Volvo dealership his buddy owns a corvette dealership”, King said. “No one wants to not have a bow”.

This January , King said she went to the National Auto Dealer Association trade show in Las Vegas to drum up business.

To draw attention to her bows, she said she hired a Bally’s showgirl for $1000 for three days.

The showgirl wore a beige miniskirt and top, stilettos and bows in the front and back. Her tagline, “Put King size Bows on your models”.

It was a hit according to King. About 450 people signed up to get more information, she said.

“Everyone was talking about the bow girl”, King said.

King Size Bows contracts out the making of its bows to an undisclosed factory in Santa Ana, King said. They come in four colors. Red bows are the biggest sellers.

The housing market is another target. King said she’s in talks with a home builder that could put bows on newly sold homes nation wide
